Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. Folk art encompasses art produced from an indigenous culture or by peasants or other laboring tradespeople. In contrast to fine art, folk art is primarily utilitarian and decorative rather than purely aesthetic.

As a phenomenon that can chronicle a move towards civilization yet rapidly diminish with modernity, industrialization, or outside influence, the nature of folk art is specific to its particular culture. The varied geographical and temporal prevalence and diversity of folk art make it difficult to describe as a whole, though some patterns have been demonstrated.

Antique Folk Art

Logo of the Folk Art Museum Lok Virsa in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Antique folk art is distinguished from traditional art in that while it is collected today based mostly on its artistic merit; it was never intended as a category to be art for art’s sake. Examples include: weathervanes, old store signs and carved figures, itinerant portraits, carousel horses, fire buckets, painted game boards, cast iron doorstops and many other similar lines of highly collectible "whimsical" antiques.

Can someone who is an art dealer tell me about my piece of folk art on ebay-a 5" wood carving of a woman?
Q. If you go on ebay, it's in Antiques, then "folk art', then'sculpted or carved', then between '1900-1949'. It is an old woman wearing a dress and an apron, with her hair in a bun, that was hand carved. I thought it might be Elijah Pierce's work, but after looking at his work it appears he did mostly 2D pieces. So really I have no clue. That's all I'm looking for - is some direction. Any help would be appreciated.

A. Well my Russian friend brought me the usual tourist stuff: nesting dolls, decorated spoons and those wonderful bark boxes. What would make a very interesting gift is maybe a traditional costume. My personal favorite are the little bark boxes.

A. I'm not sure if I have the perfect definition for folk are. I know it's got a very homey feel to it. I love its simplicity. I have been in and to juried shows and stuffy events and I've been to just craft shows where anyone can set up. I prefer to see the latter. It's amazing what great ideas people come up with.
